“All I can say is we couldn’t ask for a better turnout,” said Mayor Stéphane Sarrazin of the Township of Alfred-Plantagenet.
Mayor Sarrazin had a good view of the crowds lining up along the village’s main street from the Station Road intersection east to the junction with County Road 15. Residents and visitors gathered before the noon hour to secure themselves a good vantage point along the three-kilometre stretch to watch all of the dozens of entries in the parade that was the weekend highlight of the village’s sesquicentennial celebration.
“People were happy to get out and see each other,” Mayor Sarrazin said, adding that the 150th anniversary of the village and the founding of the Parish of St-Victor proved a long-needed tonic for the “cabin fever” affliction for many after more than a year of self-imposed confinement at home because of the pandemic.
The mayor gave full credit to the behind-the-scenes work of the Alfred 150 Committee with organizing all of the events during the past four-day celebration, including live music and various activities at Larocque Park, and other highlights.
“That beautiful turnout was our reward,” he said.
