Fire fighters from the East Hawkesbury Township, Champlain Township, and The Nation fire departments rushed to an early-morning house fire call September 12.
Despite their efforts the house, located on Country Road 10 in the Village of St-Eugène, was destroyed but the family of six were able to get out safe, though all their possessions were destroyed. The parents and four children, ages two to 10, spent the rest of the weekend at a neighbour’s home and are now staying with relatives.
Stephanie Paquette of L’Orignal has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the family. As of 9 a.m. Monday, September 14 more than $5000 was donated to the fund. Another family friend began a clothing collection drive, including baby clothing and maternity wear as the mother is expecting.
Anyone with donations for the clothing drive can call 613-677-3533. A preliminary fire department report on the cause of the fire cites an electrical problem as the suspected cause. No value estimate on the loss of the house and the family’s possession is available at present.
