Larose Forest trails open for May long weekend

Good news for local and visiting hikers and cyclists. Local and visiting hikers and cyclists have reason to celebrate during the May long weekend as the Larose Forest trails reopen for recreational use.

The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR), which owns and manages the community forest, announced that some of the Larose Forest trails will be open for users starting Saturday, May 16.

The reopening of the trails follows the end of the annual spring thaw and also recent provincial government decisions for relaxation of some of the restrictions of the pandemic protection strategy. Provincial parks will reopen to the public for the May long weekend and where feasible community walking and cycling trails, and trails for ATV, dirt bikes, and horseback –riding will also reopen.

For the Larose Forest, just the trails that are accessible from the P1 and P7 parking lots in the Limoges area of the community forest will open this weekend. The trails from the P4 parking lot in the Bourget are still closed as ground conditions are still too wet there for trail use.

The trails which are open this weekend are just for walking and cycling. Also users must obey the guidelines set up to maintain social distancing. The trails are one-way only and use is limited to individuals or groups up to a maximum size of five, and all users must maintain a two-metre distance between them and other users.

The washrooms may be available but are not sanitized on a regular basis. The Henri Latreille shelter will also remain closed for now under provincial regulations.

Anyone who has any of the known COVID-19 symptoms should stay home and continue to self-isolate and not go onto the trails until their situation is resolved.
