Eastern Ontario making progress against pandemic reports EOHU

About half of the people in Eastern Ontario who contracted COVID-19 have recovered from the disease.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Eastern Ontario totalled 91 as of April 28. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) reported 45 cases of people who recovered from the disease after they were first diagnosed.

“And the good news is we haven’t had any deaths,” said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, EOHU chief medical health officer, during his Tuesday (April 28) daily media teleconference.

Dr. Roumeliotis also noted that “the (pandemic) curve is starting to flatten out” for the Eastern Ontario region, though he cautioned residents in the region about getting complacent.

“It’s not time yet to give up on our activities,” he said, regarding the need to maintain pandemic prevention guidelines like social distancing and avoiding unnecessary travel.

Dr. Roumeliotis noted concerns among some residents in the region about the “big increase” in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases from the previous week’s total of 78. He observed that the outbreak at the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Plantagenet prior to the April 25 weekend is the reason for the jump in the COVID-19 total for Eastern Ontario.

Before the nursing home outbreak was confirmed, Dr. Roumeliotis noted, there was a noticeable slowdown showing in the spread of the disease along with a continuing increase in the number of people recovering from their bouts with COVID-19.
