NCJHL playoffs series begin

Les Cougars de Vankleek Hill et les Castors de Clarence Creek ont chacun gagné un match et perdu un match contre leur adversaire respectif lors du premier tour des séries de quarts de finale. The action on the ice was hot over the February 21 weekend with the start of the National Capital Junior Hockey League’s playoffs schedule.

For the three Prescott-Russell clubs in the league, the quarterfinals series of games has the Vankleek Hill Cougars matched against the Gatineau-Hull Volant, while the Clarence Creek Castors face the North Dundas Rockets, and les Aigles de St-Isidore deal with the Bytown Royals.

Both the Cougars and the Castors finished the weekend with one win and one loss against their opponents. Les Aigles crowned the Royals two games straight to take the lead in their quarterfinals schedule.

Vankleek Hill

The Cougars beat the Volant 6-3 in last Friday’s opening match in Gatineau of their quarterfinals series. Le Volant returned the favour by taking the Cougars down 9-5 the following Saturday night at the Vankleek Hill Arena.

Scoring for Vankleek Hill Friday night were Nikolas Ayotte, Justin Chaumont, Mathieu Cloutier, Vincent Huneault, Jonathan Lacroix, and Samuel Lemay. Assisting were Lemay, Zack Labbé, and Charles-Olivier Portelance.

Goals for the Cougars Saturday night came from Nicolas Castonguay with two and singles from Justin Chaumont, Mathieu Cloutier, and Jonathan Lacroix. Goal assists came from Ayotte, Chaumont, Portelance, Austin Gaspar, and Trystan Lavoie.

The action returns to Vankleek Hill February 26 for the third game in the series.

St-Isidore

Les Aigles de St-Isidore gave Bytown a royal headache in their first two games of the NCJHL quarterfinals series. St-Isidore clipped Bytown 4-3 in last Friday’s opener in Ottawa and then hammered the opposing team 5-1 on home ice Sunday in St-Isidore.

Scoring for St-Isidore in Friday’s game were Jeremy Arbour, Jonathan Paquette, Adam Porter, and Patrick Rangers. Assisting on the goals were Jakob Brunette, Philippe Burden, Yanick Dicaire, Mathieu Grandmont, Kevin Howson, and Nicholas Roy.

Sunday night Brunette scored two goals for St-Isidore with Grandmont, Ranger and Patrick Wells firing in singles. Goal assists came from Brunette, Howson, Paquette, Ranger and Wells.

Third game in the series was scheduled for February 25 in St-Isidore then Friday in Ottawa, with the fifth game, if needed, scheduled for Sunday night in St-Isidore.

Clarence Creek

The Castors brought down the Rockets 5-3 Saturday night at the Clarence Creek Arena but lost their home ice advantage Sunday as the Rockets roared away with a 7-3 win.

Saturday night goals for Clarence Creek came from Jordan Croll-Stevenson, Logan Lefebvre, Brandon Legare, Zachary Payer, and Caleb Smith. Assisting on the goals were Lefebvre, Connor Head-Smith, Natan Melée, Gabriel Rousselle, and Jacob Servant.

Sunday afternoon saw Croll-Stevenson punch in a pair of goals for Clarence Creek with Zack Lugli popping in a single. Assisting on the goals were Legare, Servant, and Smith.

The action shifts to the Chesterville Arena Wednesday and Friday, with the fifth game of the quarterfinals series Saturday night at the Clarence Creek Arena.
