Complexe sportif Limoges
La Municipalité de La Nation a soumis une demande de financement au ministère de l’Infrastructure pour le Programme d’infrastructure Investir dans le Canada: volet communautaire, culturel et récréatif. Si la demande de financement est approuvée, la municipalité pourrait recevoir 73 % du cout total de la construction du Complexe sportif de Limoges. La municipalité doit mettre le projet en attente jusqu’à ce qu’elle obtienne une réponse du ministère. La municipalité espère obtenir une réponse avant le mois de juin 2020. Dans l’éventualité que la municipalité ne reçoive pas de subvention, le projet ira tout de même de l’avant. – Annie Lafortune
Attention, piétons!
Avec l’arrivée de la glace et de la neige, les trottoirs, traverses et autres voies récréatives se transforment en zones dangereuses. Or, selon une recommandation soumise au conseil municipal de Hawkesbury et conforme aux lois de l’Ontario, le Service des travaux publics de Hawkesbury n’effectuera pas d’entretien hivernal sur un ensemble de voies piétonnières. Élections au CSDCEO
François Bazinet a été élu sans opposition au poste de président du Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) et Roger Chartrand à celui de vice-président, également sans opposition. C’est le 3 décembre que le vote a eu lieu, lors de la séance inaugurale du CSDCEO. M. Bazinet œuvre dans le milieu de l’éducation depuis 45 ans et en politique depuis 2010. C’est un quatrième mandat pour François Bazinet. Quant à M. Chartrand, il est conseiller scolaire depuis 19 ans. Il s’agit d’un sixième mandat pour lui. – Annie Lafortune
Council meeting shifts
Champlain Township council will have its regular meetings once a month, on the second Thursday instead of the second Tuesday, starting in 2020. The committee of the whole meetings, if they are on the schedule, will still take place on Tuesday, the week before the regular council session. The change from Tuesday to Thursday for the regular meetings is to allow staff extra time for any detailed follow-up reports for council from committee of the whole business.– Gregg Chamberlain

Toutes les installations publiques de loisirs et autres du Canton de Champlain respectent maintenant toutes les normes antitabac provinciales. Le rapport sur les parcs et loisirs soumis lors de la séance du conseil du 10 décembre indiquait que tous les panneaux d’interdiction de fumer ou de vapotage sont installés partout dans la municipalité et que » tous les cendriers dans les endroits désignés » ont été enlevés – Gregg Chamberlain.
Vankleek Hill ambulance
Champlain Township will contract with the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) for a new five-year lease, to designate parking and work space in the Vankleek Hill fire hall for the UCPR ambulance service.– Gregg Chamberlain
Winter flood risk
Cold temperature and almost no snow have created a potential nuisance flooding risk if December weather proves rainy. The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) has put the water safety hazard at Yellow status for the South Nation River watershed region. An SNC information brief states that water levels are normal for this time of year, but the below-ground frost means that the soil in the region is now saturated from past precipitation. Any excess rainfall now could result in nuisance flooding in low-lying areas of the watershed.– Gregg Chamberlain
Sikh paramedics
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) is lobbying the provincial government to amend its uniform guidelines regarding paramedic personnel, to allow male paramedics to have beards. The regulation will ensure that Sikhs who work as paramedics in Ontario will be able to fulfill all their duties on the job. Devout and practising Sikh men have full beards.– Gregg Chamberlain
Donations welcome
As provincial support funds dry up, the South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) asks residents and businesses in the South Nation River watershed region, to consider donations to help the non-profit agency maintain its flood management and wildlife conservation work, and its community outreach work. Donations made up 10 per cent of the SNC’s 2019 budget revenue, and supported bilingual youth programs like the Youth Fishing Camp and the Stream of Dreams eco-educational art programs, along with dedicated trail maintenance and other works. Merit award
Naomi Gadbois, a teacher at Pleasant Corners Public School in Vankleek Hill, is one of seven employees with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) to be nominated for the 2019 UCDSB Director’s Award of Merit. The awards are presented to UCDSB employees who “bring the best of themselves to the workplace on a regular basis” and help make a positive working environment for staff and students. Gadbois and the other six nominees will receive their award certificates during the June 2020 UCDSB board Celebration Night event.– Gregg Chamberlain
