First COVID-19 deaths in Prescott-Russell

The first deaths due to COVID-19 are confirmed for the Prescott-Russell region.

Two residents at the Pinecrest Nursing Home in Plantagenet have died as a result of complications related to COVID-19. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) confirmed the deaths in a May 4 email news release sent out to local media.

“I am saddened by the news,” stated Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, EOHU chief medical officer. “On behalf of the Board of Health and all EOHU staff, I am offering our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased residents.”

A woman in her 70s and a man in his 80s died at the local nursing home over the first weekend of May. They died of complications from the disease on May 3.

The nursing home is dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak which affected eight residents and three staff members. The EOHU is doing priority testing of all 17 long-term care facilities within its jurisdiction and will also focus on priority testing of 35 seniors retirement and other group home lodging operations within the Five Counties region and the City of Cornwall.
