With the high temperatures persisting, the Township of Russell opened daytime cooling centers to provide relief to residents in need from Thursday, August 1, to Saturday, August 3.

The Sports Dome located at 150 Sportsplex Street in Embrun is open Thursday, Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The Township of Russell Library located at 1053 Concession Street in Russell is open Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The cooling centers have air conditioning, tables, chairs, and water.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) reminds residents that extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and, in extreme cases, death.

Seniors, young children, and those taking certain medications are especially at-risk during heat waves.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, wear light-coloured clothing, and stay cool.

The Russell Centennial Pool is open to the public. For the regular pool schedule, visit the Russell Township website under the Publix Pool and Swimming Lessons section.

The Splash Pad at Yahoo Park is also accessible for children. It will be open an hour later, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. during the heat wave.

Pets are not allowed near the public pool or splash pad.

For more information on precautions to take to stay safe during the heat wave, visit the Eastern Ontario Health Unit’s website.
