Who has the best pizza in Rockland? Finally, we have an answer, and it was revealed during the Clarence-Rockland Festival.
And that answer is Main Street Pizza, according to the people and a trio of judges.
In partnership with the City of Clarence-Rockland, TVC22, an independent not-for-profit organization founded in 1990 as a community TV station whose main mandate is to produce TV shows, launched a pizza competition, asking residents across the city to vote for their favourite, local pizza place.
On Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29, residents were asked to purchase a pizza from five participating pizza restaurants, between the hours and 12 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Five local restaurants participated in the partnership.
The top three restaurants after the two day voting period – Main Street Pizza, Boston Pizza and Spartas Pizza and Mediterranean Grill- moved on to the final round, where judges City councillor Kyle Cyr, Amanda Clayton, Tim Horton’s restaurant manager, and Pierre Labrecque, a self-proclaimed pizza lover and resident who was named one of the judges through a contest ran by TVC22, took factors such as taste and presentation when deciding this year’s winner.
Participating restaurants sold a total of $677 pizzas over the course of the two-day voting period (394 on Friday, June 28 and 283 on Saturday, June 29).
In total, the event raised $777, which is equally given to TVC22 and the Rockland Food Bank.
The money raised also included a $100 donation from Rockland Pizza, who was selling food on site during the Clarence-Rockland Festival.
The winning restaurant receives a certificate and bragging rights as the best pizza place in town.
The station hosted an information session explaining how the competition would work for the nearly 20 pizza restaurants spread out across the region, as there are nearly 20, enticing five to participate.
Linda Pilon, the treasurer of the board of directors for TVC22, said depending on feedback and the buzz around the event, a pizza competition could become a yearly tradition.
Main Street Pizza posted a heartfelt thank you to the community after it was chosen as one of the three finalists.
“Main Street Pizza would like to thank all of our loyal customers that has support us during this weekend for the Clarence-Rockland pizza competition,” the post to Facebook said. “And also thank you to all of the employees that have been working hard.”
And once it was all said and done, an ecstatic Main Street Pizza once again thanked everyone for the support.
