A delicious aroma on the afternoon breeze helped lure many to Vankleek Hill’s Main Street to enjoy this year’s Festival of Flavours.
“It’s been excellent,” said Sammie Putzel, festival coordinator.
The weekend weather for the September 8 event saw thick cloud cover on Sunday with a steady breeze. Despite the cool weather, attendance at the event saw a steady stream of residents and visitors to the village wandering up and down the closed-off section of Main Street, visiting kiosks set up to display crafts, jewellery, and other offerings, and enjoy a variety of dishes that ranged from Tibet-style Himalayan dumplings to traditional Canadian snack shack fare.
“The weather has been perfect, actually,” said Putzel. “Cool weather makes for a good appetite, and there is so much variety here. We have Thai, we have Indian, we have local farmers selling their produce.”
Popular local band 50 Proof provided a litany of danceable classic rock and other songs. The Vankleek Hill Public Library also saw a brisk trade of browsing bibliophiles checking out the offerings of used books in good condition and ready for reading as part of the library’s own fundraising work.
“All in all, it’s been a perfect community event.” said Putzel.
