Gunfire that rang out in the early morning hours of Thursday, September 5, in Vankleek Hill is being investigated as a targeted shooting, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, officers from the Hawkesbury detachments of the OPP responded to reports of multiple gun shots being fired at parked vehicles along Highway 34 near Main Street West in Vankleek Hill.

Police indicated the suspect, or suspects, fled the scene heading westbound on County Road 10 in a black or dark vehicle.

No injuries have been reported.

Investigators believe the incident to be targeted, and there is no imminent risk to public safety. Police would not state why they believe the shooting to be targeted.

This is the second targeted shooting to take place in Champlain Township in six months. Late in the night on April 7, shots were fired at a residence on Sainte-Anne Road. In that case, police believed the shooters targeted the wrong house. Police have not revealed the outcome of their investigation into the April 7 shooting.

OPP spokesperson Bill Dickson said police are still in the early stages of the investigation and cannot « speculate on any potential connection » to other incidents.

OPP would not release any further information as the investigation is ongoing.
