Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts 50 to 75 millimetres of rainfall, with the potential for localized rainfall exceeding amounts of 100 millimetres.

Storms related to Tropical Storm Debby are expected to reach Ontario on Friday, July 9, and will bring significant precipitation.

According to the South Nation Conservation (SNC), water levels and flows are currently normal in Eastern Ontario this time of year. The rainfall, which should last from Friday and continue into Saturday morning may increase water levels and flows in rivers, fast-flowing water, and slippery or unstable banks. Flooding is possible in low-lying areas.

Residents are advised to take extreme caution and stay away from rivers and parents are encouraged to explain these dangers to their children.

Residents in flood-prone or low-lying areas should monitor weather forecasts and take the necessary precautions to protect their property, to ensure their sump pump is clear and in good working condition, to have easy access to a portable backup generator and pump, that downspouts are clear, and the outlet is at least three metres from the dwelling, to secure items that might float away as flows increase.

This water safety statement is in effect until Tuesday, August 13, at 5 p.m. or until an update has been issued.

SNC monitors the water levels and weather forecasts as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. Updates are provided as conditions change on their website www.nation.on.ca.
