In an effort “to build connections” with the community, the Hawkesbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) launched a bicycle patrol unit to pedal the streets of the Town.

Seven police officers from the OPP were trained to operate police bicycles and “will focus on crime prevention, enforcement of various laws, and being highly visible throughout the Hawkesbury detachment area, including on trail systems, at parks, and throughout residential areas,” according to the police.

The OPP believes the bicycle patrol unit will be a unique way to make connections with the community and engage with residents in a way that cannot be replicated with patrol cars. OPP stated residents can expect to see the bicycle officers at community events this summer like parades, fundraisers, and police-led initiatives like R.I.D.E. programs and seatbelt clinics.
