Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), mandated to investigate circumstances involving police and civilians that result in serious injury, announced May 16 that it is investigating the discharge of at least one shot from an OPP officer after police were called to the Laval Street residence.

On May 11, three OPP officers responded to a call regarding gunshots heard from the house in Bourget. Shortly after, police allege all three officers were shot and hit by Alain Bellefeuille from the house. All three were transported to hospital for their injuries. Sgt. Eric Mueller died from his injuries soon after the encounter.

Police returned to the scene the following day and the OPP forensic team found evidence indicating one officer had fired his weapon during the interaction. The OPP informed the SIU.

No one was struck as a result of the shot. Three investigators and one forensic investigator has been assigned to the case, according to the SIU.

Bellefeuille has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. His lawyer is also telling local and national media that his client did not “ambush” the police as OPP news briefs have stated.
