The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) and Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) will work together over the next three years on a $375,000 project aimed at reclaiming and restoring wetland areas in Eastern Ontario. DUC got federal funding for the project through the Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund.
“Wetlands perform many functions that improve climate resiliency, address water quality issues, and protect our communities from flooding,” stated Michelle Cavanagh, SNC spokesperson. “They’re also essential habitat for as many as 600 species of wildlife in Canada.”
SNC and DUC have worked together on past projects dealing with wetland conservation and restoration. Success in those projects was part of the reason that the DUC contacted the SNC to become a partner in this new three-year program.
“We look forward to continuing our successful partnerships restoring wetlands that will strengthen biodiversity and climate-readiness in eastern Ontario communities,” stated Owen Steele, DUC spokesman. “Working with South Nation Conservation, we can efficiently identify high-value conservation opportunities in these communities and put on-the-ground restoration where it makes a positive difference.”
