Firefighters rushed to downtown Hawkesbury Wednesday morning in response to a house fire call.

The location of the fire was a two-storey residential building on James Street between the intersections of Main Street and Regent Street.

The fire department’s ladder truck was parked in the alleyway courtyard at the rear of the building and firefighters, wearing self-contained breathing units, were trying to break through the ceiling of the building to get access to the fire.

Both the intersections at Main Street and Regent Street were blocked off to traffic by city works crews to  allow firefighters at the front of the building to focus on their work.

Other barricades were set up at several alley entrances also and a single barricade set up on the fire hose connected to a hydrant on Main Street. The barricade for that site was necessary as one motorist, who was trying to get to the rear parking lot for a Main Street business, drove over the hose just after it became filled with water and ready for firefighters to use.

More details on the fire will be posted when available.
