Cases soar over long weekend as ‘shutdown’ begins

The restrictions, which took effect from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, were be as strict as those between Christmas and early February, but included bans on all indoor and outdoor dining, as well as the use of facilities at gyms and other indoor and outdoor sporting venues. Schools remained open.

Indoor organized public events and social gatherings were banned, and capacity for outdoor organized public events or social gatherings were limited to a five-person maximum, except for gatherings with members of the same household or gatherings of members of one household and one other person who lives alone.

Weddings, funerals, and religious services, rites or ceremonies were limited to 15 percent of capacity for indoor rooms. The restrictions did not include social gatherings associated with those services such as receptions, which are not permitted indoors and are limited to five people outdoors.

From Friday to Sunday, the EOHU reported 116 new cases, including 48 in Prescott-Russell. The new transmissions pushed the region’s active case count to 442, the highest since January.

Dr. Roumeliotis said he had called for a stay-at-home order to accompany the lockdown. “I think that lockdowns alone aren’t as effective as adding either a curfew or a stay-at-home order,” he said. “We’re seeing a lot of these cases from social gatherings. Toronto was locked down for this period of time and not much changed. We’ve raised our concerns and we’ll see what happens.”
