Russell Township will add green markings, new bollards, and signs to advise motorists of the path at two intersections near the Embrun Arena in the first half of 2021. The path, which cyclists and pedestrians use, is attached to the rest of the roadway but is separated by reflective, flexible bollards.
The municipal council voted on Monday night to approve the plan to improve the visibility and safety of the footpath. Members of the Parks and Recreation Committee had earlier expressed concern about safety on the path and questioned whether it could be separated from the road during repaving or coloured for greater prominence.
Under the plan proposed to council on Monday, the path would be painted green at intersections where cars would cross over, similar to the design of bike lanes at busy intersections. Signs would also advise motorists to yield to anybody on the path. Bollards would be installed at entrances to the path to advise vehicles to keep clear.
