Students all across Prescott-Russell and the rest of Ontario were still in class on Monday thanks to a close-to-the-wire agreement between the province and the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
Three hours before Sunday’s midnight deadline on negotiations, the two sides came to agreement on a possible new contract for support workers at Ontario schools. The new contract still needs ratification by union members later this month but it means that schools will remain open instead of closing this week as was feared last Friday.
Both the Upper Canada District School Board and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario both expressed relief on their websites at the last-moment deal over the October 6 weekend.
