The Clarence-Rockland EMC3 Master Swim Club has become more than just a club for its nearly 50 members.

It has become a place where bonds are formed, friendships are made, and encouragement runs high as different swimmers train for a competition or marathon.

“My wife and I and a friend of ours started swimming at the Y, and we thought, we should see if there are other people like us that want to meet once a week and swim,” said Greg Stevens, who was one of the original members of the club along with his wife, Janice Stevens and their friend, Philippa Cureton.

Word of mouth started spread about the swimming club, and today, the adult swim club boasts a membership of 48 members. Stevens said club members range anywhere from 18 to people in their mid 60s.

The club has coaches that work with swimmers who range from different skill levels. Some have started with the club as casual swimmers who are just looking for a workout and thanks to the club, have gone on to compete in swimming competitions and others have participated in iron man marathons.

“Swimming creates bonds,” said Stevens. “Our members come from all different backgrounds – we have business owners, teachers and just people who want to stay in shape.”

Stevens said the club asks members that they have the ability to swim at least 100 metres. The club does offer coaching that helps the swimmers.

“We even have people coming in from Orleans or other parts of Ottawa because there is such a wait list and demands for programs in Ottawa,” said Lisa Trahan, a member of the swimming club. “We are happy that there are people that want to meet and swim, and we aren’t all competitive swimmers or serious swimmers. Swimming offers a full body workout and works every muscle.”

Members organize swims outside of club times, and are known to cheer on their fellow club members at various competitions.

“There is just something about being in the water, it just makes you feel good,” said Chantale Lalonde, who joined the swim club based on word of mouth. “We laugh and push and encourage each other.”
