When seven-year-old Bobby Morrison noticed that his local newspaper, Le Reflet, didn’t feature any comic strips, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Combining his love of storytelling and humour, Bobby created his own comic strip and submitted it to the paper. Problem solved!
An avid reader and budding artist, Bobby draws inspiration from popular series such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Big Nate, and Calvin and Hobbes. His comic strip follows the adventures of a boy named Dave and his best friend, a bear named Bobby, who took his name “because I wanted it to be catchy.”
Bobby’s passion for comics stems from his love of reading and creating stories.
“I like comic strips a lot, but I’ve read all the ones I own right now,” he explained. “And there’s none in the newspaper, so I wanted to get mine in the newspaper.”
His creative efforts have already earned him the admiration of his teachers and friends, who enjoy seeing his artwork and unique stories. Bobby is eagerly anticipating using the library at the Catholic elementary school in Embrun next year, where he hopes to further develop his skills and one day turn his passion into a career.
“It’s fun to watch,” said Bobby’s father, Ryan Morrison. “He loves reading comic books and different novels, and he’s always talking about writing books and creating comic strips. He’s always got lots on the go and wanted to share them. He was wondering why there were no comic strips in the local newspaper, so I thought, ‘Well, why not send them in and see what happens?’”
