The Township of Russell is set to see major improvements to Route 300 after the Ontario government approved $6.3 million in funding for intersection upgrades. The announcement was made on January 27, 2025, at Russell’s Town Hall by Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MPP Stéphane Sarrazin.
The funding, provided under the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing (HECS) stream of the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP), represents 50 percent of the project’s total eligible cost of $12.7 million. The initiative aims to enhance the Route 300 corridor, making it safer and more efficient to accommodate future growth in the township.
Key upgrades include the construction of roundabouts at St-Guillaume Road, in partnership with the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, and at St-Pierre Road, along with the addition of turning lanes at St-Augustin Road and St-Thomas Road.
“This is exciting news for Russell Township,” said MPP Sarrazin. “I am happy to see that the Ontario government is investing in this project to improve the intersection of Route 300. I look forward to seeing the positive impact of these improvements.”
Supporting Growth in Embrun
Town officials say these infrastructure projects are critical to supporting housing developments, particularly in Embrun, where the upgrades will help facilitate the construction of over 2,000 new homes.
“This $6.3 million investment in Route 300 is one of the largest grants our township has ever received,” said Russell Township Mayor Mike Tarnowski. “This funding […] is a vital step in ensuring that our infrastructure meets the needs of our residents and paves the way for a strong, sustainable future for Russell Township.”
The project is currently in the planning stage, with construction expected to begin in the summer of 2026.
