The City of Clarence-Rockland council approved Councillor Samuel Cardarelli’s motion requesting City staff to review the costs associated with installing benches and garbage receptacles on some of the city’s urban collector roads.
Ward 4 Councillor Cardarelli presented the motion at Clarence-Rockland’s October meeting, asking his colleagues to consider his request to examine the costs of adding benches and bins on the city’s urban collector roads and to report back to council.
Cardarelli’s motion, seconded by Councillor Carl Grimard, was passed at the council meeting on Nov. 13.
“The City of Clarence-Rockland has experienced rapid growth, and it is essential that our public infrastructure reflects the needs of all residents,” reads the motion presented to Council. “Current design guidelines and engineering standards for collector roads do not identify opportunities to install benches and garbage receptacles.”
In his motion, Cardarelli noted that if the City installs benches and trash receptacles along these roads, it will “improve accessibility, promote cleanliness, encourage a healthy community, and accommodate the changing demographics of our city.”
He requested that City staff review and revise the recommended design guidelines and engineering standards for the City’s urban collector roads, with a view to adding benches and garbage bins, and report back to Council.
The Ward 4 councillor also emphasized the importance of understanding the long-term budgetary and maintenance implications of these additions to ensure they are managed sustainably.
“There’s just not enough benches and garbage bins on some of these roads,” said Councillor Cardarelli. “This is the first step, and there is no timeline for staff to get this done.”
Cardarelli mentioned that streets in Rockland, such as Dr. Corbeil Street and Caron Street, would be considered, as residents have expressed concerns about these particular areas.
“We will get some info and some numbers and decide at a later time,” said Cardarelli.
