The longest-reigning monarch in British history has passed away. Government officials confirmed to media today that Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

The daughter of King George VI, Princess Elizabeth became Queen of England in 1952 after her father passed away. During her 70-year reign she has ruled over the Commonwealth and been a part of many social and political changes.

Her son, Prince Charles, is now King Charles III.

At the United Counties of Prescott-Russell office in L’Orignal, Chief Administrator Stephane Parisien confirmed that the flags there will come down to half-mast « effective immediately until the funeral day. »

« It’s sad news, » said Warden Daniel Lafleur. « She did good things for Canada. That’s what we have to remember. »

Similar expressions of respect and mourning are taking place across Canada.

The British government will announced details later for the official period of mourning and the date set for the funeral.
