During this year’s Police Week from May 15 to 21, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are urging individuals who are dedicated to upholding the law and serving their communities to consider a police officer’s career path. Hundreds of officers will be entering retirement in the next few years, so the OPP are searching for people to fill out their ranks before that happens. There are several positions that candidates may apply for.
Uniform officers are trusted and relied upon to aid in emergencies, day or night. Uniform officers can experience several different specializations over their career, including technical collision investigator, scenes of crime officer, and mental health crisis response team member.
Civilians are non-uniform members who provide critical support to their communities. There are hundreds of civilian careers, such as Civilian Data Entry (CDE) and positions in Provincial Communications Centres (PCCs), as well as administrative, specialized, and managerial positions.
Special constables are civilian members who have been given limited peace officer or police officer powers by the Commissioner for a specific job or task. Auxiliary members are dedicated volunteers who are trained to assist with frontline policing operations to ensure the safety of their communities.
