The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) and VIA Rail have agreed to another extension of the user agreement between them for the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail. The new extension is until the end of January 2022.
UCPR council ratified the extension at the end of its August 25 session after an in-camera review of the proposal. Chief Administrator Stéphane Parisien confirmed during a later phone interview that negotiations continue between the UCPR and VIA Rail over the future of the recreational trail route.
“Things are going well,” he said.
The 72-kilometre recreational trail follows the route of a former CPR railway bed that now belongs to VIA Rail. The rails were removed in 1986 and the PR Trail was created in 2006. Past user agreements between the UCPR and VIA Rail have been lease arrangements. Discussions between the two parties now concern turning over ownership of the former railway route and its rights-of-way to the UCPR.
