Government plans faster second dose rollout

The Ontario government has announced plans to shorten the timing between first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccines, with plans to have the majority of the population fully immunized by the end of summer.

Premier Doug Ford announced on Friday morning that the increasing supply of vaccines would allow the province to accelerate the rollout of second doses in the province. The gap between the first and second doses could fall to four weeks, down from the maximum 16, he said.

People aged 80 and over will be eligible to book an earlier second dose appointment from Monday, May 31 at 8:00 a.m. at covid-19.ontario.ca/book-vaccine/, followed by those aged 70 and over a week later on June 7. The earlier bookings are not automatic, but are instead a choice for each individual to make. There is no guarantee of securing an earlier appointment than was already allocated.

About 65 percent of adults in Ontario have received their first dose, ahead of the target set for the first stage of reopening on June 14. At a Friday morning press conference, Ford gave no indication that the reopening of restaurant patios and other facilities would be brought forward, noting that other benchmarks such as intensive care capacity and positivity rates also factored into the decision.

No new information was presented about the potential reopening of schools to in-person learning. Ford sent a letter to 55 different groups and people earlier this week seeking input, with a deadline of Friday at 5 p.m. to respond.
